Iowa City man accused of firing gun at his pregnant girlfriend

Allegedly firing a gun at his pregnant girlfriend has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

21-year-old Dayvon Long of South Dubuque Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 12:30 Sunday morning. Iowa City Police say just before 6:00 Saturday night Long was engaged in a domestic assault against his pregnant girlfriend at her Wayne Avenue apartment when he shoved her into a dresser, then to the ground. He then reportedly pulled out a handgun and fired a shot at her as she fled. The bullet hit a television in the bedroom. Three children were present during the incident.

Long was convicted of a felony in Wisconsin in 2023 after he failed to appear for a jail sentence on a battery charge.

Long is now charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage, Going Armed With Intent, Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, Intimidation With a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault of a Pregnant Person While Using a Weapon, Domestic Abuse Assault With Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Assault With a Firearm on a Pregnant Person, and four counts of Child Endangerment. If convicted on all charges, Long faces a maximum of 47 years in prison.
