A transient faces numerous charges after a pair of thefts over the span of just over 12 hours on the University of Iowa campus.
38-year-old Kofi Adu Sarkodie was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 3:15 Thursday afternoon. UI Police say just after 7:00 Wednesday night Adu Sarkodie entered the College of Nursing on Newton Road and was seen rifling through drawers, boxes and employees’ desks. The building was closed to the public, but there was still a janitor and students inside. Adu Sarkodie then allegedly left the building with a stolen drink bottle and pulled a fire alarm on his way out, triggering a response from the Iowa City Fire Department.
Just after 9:30 the next morning Adu Sarkodie reportedly stole a bicycle valued at $1,200 from the Finkbine commuter lot on Hawkins Drive, including a $25 utility bag and a $75 helmet. Police say he smelled of burnt marijuana, showed signs of drug use, and admitted to smoking marijuana and using methamphetamine.
Adu Sarkodie is charged with 2nd Degree Burglary, 3rd Degree Theft, Making a False Report to a Public Entity, Public Intoxication and two counts each of Trespassing and 5th Degree Theft. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 12 years in prison.
