The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will have a new member as a result of Tuesday’s Johnson County elections.
Royceann Porter finished fourth in the Democratic primary, finishing behind incumbents Rod Sullivan and Lisa Green-Douglas and challenger Mandi Remington. Only the top three vote-getters move on to the general election. Bob Conrad finished fifth.
By percentage, Sullivan got 24.4%, followed by Green-Douglass with 22.5%, Remington with 21.9%. Porter got 17 percent, and Conrad 13.7 percent. A total of 17,446 votes were cast in the local supervisor primary.
The only other contested race on the Democratic side saw Elinor A. Levin easily defeat Ty Bopp for the House District 89 nomination. Bopp dropped out of the race in April…too late to be removed from the ballot.
The only local contested race on the Republican side saw Judd Lawlor defeat Adam Grier for the House District 91 nomination.
In the U.S. House District 1 race, incumbent Marianette Miller-Meeks won a close race over challenger David Pausch. After securing the nomination, she released a statement saying, “I look forward to taking our message to every Iowan in our district ahead of November. I share Iowans’ priorities for the next Congress: securing our southern border, getting inflation and the cost of living under control, tackling the mounting national debt, making sure we have strong K-12 education, and addressing escalating conflicts around the world.”
In response, the Iowa Democratic Party in their statement said it took nearly a million dollars in special interest outside spending to get Miller-Meeks elected. Party spokesperson Paige Golden said Miller Meeks’ opponent this November, Christina Bohannan, “is running a strong, organized campaign focused on the issues that matter to Iowans – good jobs, lower health care costs, reproductive freedom, and common sense.”
Tuesday afternoon Johnson County Auditor Travis Weipert told KCJJ that turnout was overall low, with increased Republican voting due to several contested races. There was also higher turnout in the Swisher/Shueyville and Tiffin areas.
