An Iowa City man who reportedly was driving with his lights off at night faces jail time after fleeing a traffic stop.

The incident occurred around 9:30pm Thursday.  46-year-old Lukelelo Msebengi of Spring Ridge Drive was near the intersection of Pepper and Briar Drives when he was observed operating his Toyota Highlander without his lights activated. A stop was attempted, but instead of obeying officer audible and visual signs to stop, he reportedly continued driving.

Msebengi eventually turned down a dead end road, ran from the vehicle on foot, and was caught after a brief chase.

A check of Msebengi’s driving record showed him as revoked for OWI test refusal until December 2025.

He was charged with one count each of Eluding, Driving while Revoked, and Interference with Official Acts. He could face up to 14 months in jail if convicted on all charges.
