Next phase of 1st Avenue/I-80 interchange project begins early Monday morning in Coralville

City of Coralville news release

See information below regarding a change in traffic control at the 1st Avenue & I-80 interchange (Exit 242).

Starting early morning, Monday, June 3, 2024, and continuing into early August:
  • The on-ramp from 1st Avenue to I-80 eastbound will be closed until early August. Drivers on 1st Avenue wanting to go east on I-80 will be detoured west to the Coral Ridge Avenue interchange (Exit 240) and then brought back on I-80 eastbound.
Continuing through summer/fall 2024:
  • 1st Avenue is one lane in each direction through the interchange using the new diverging diamond traffic pattern. See image below and note the following:
    • To learn more about diverging diamond interchanges, please watch this Iowa DOT video:

    • Traffic signals, pavement markings, and traffic signage will help drivers understand how to navigate through the interchange.
    • 1st Avenue traffic will switch to the left side of the road before passing over I-80 and then back to the right side of the road after passing over I-80.
    • To travel on 1st Avenue all the way through the interchange, drivers will go straight at each traffic signal.
  • Bicyclists and pedestrians are using the new grade-separated trail from the northeast corner of E. 9th Street, through two trail tunnels, over I-80 on the trail bridge, through a new trail tunnel crossing under 1st Avenue, and connecting to the trail that continues north along the west side of 1st Avenue.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is managing this project. Please check their 511ia.org website for project updates and real-time traffic conditions.

About the Project
The Iowa Department of Transportation is reconstructing the interchange at I-80 exit 242 and 1st Avenue with a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Major construction started in March 2023. 1st Avenue is reduced to one lane in each direction over I-80 into fall 2024. Drivers should anticipate traffic delays and plan accordingly.
