The Iowa City Housing Authority (ICHA) will no longer be accepting applications for the Housing Choice Voucher Program and will close its wait list at 5 p.m. on July 1st until further notice. That’s according to a news release from the city.
The current wait time for a voucher to become available is over four years. City officials say due to the significant wait, the Department of Housing and Urban Development recommended closing the wait list. Once the list is ready to be reopened, a public announcement will be shared.
The city says during the closure staff will remain focused on efficient and supportive delivery of services to current voucher holders and those on the existing waitlist. The Housing Authority will continue to partner with Johnson County Coordinated Entry and the existing partners that provide specialty vouchers dedicated to persons with a disabling condition, households experiencing homelessness, Project Based Vouchers at the 501 Project and Cross Park Place, and for veterans experiencing homelessness.
Anyone with questions can contact the Housing Authority at 319-356-5400 or email icha@iowa-city.org.
Those at risk of homelessness are urged to visit https://www.iowahousinghelp.com/ to connect with resources available through Coordinated Entry.
