Allegedly stealing a food delivery van that was left running while the driver was picking up an order has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

53-year-old Craig McConnaha of the Town & Campus Apartments on Arthur Street was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after noon on Thursday. McConnaha is accused of stealing a 2016 Chevy Express while the driver was picking up an order at the Muscatine Avenue Subway just before 8:45 on the morning of May 17th. The alleged theft was captured on security video.

Iowa City Police say McConnaha then drove the van to the parking lot at 420 N. 1st Avenue, got out, and began walking around the area. He reportedly told arriving officers that he was going to walk home. When told he was not free to leave, he allegedly tried to run.

Police say once he was in custody, McConnaha claimed he used meth and was schizophrenic. He’s now charged with 1st Degree Theft and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of over ten years in prison.
