Cities and municipalities across the state are working to comply with the new state law regarding automated traffic enforcement cameras.

The law, passed by legislators and signed by Governor Kim Reynolds this month, requires local governments to obtain a permit from the Iowa Department of Transportation to deploy any new cameras. Existing cameras are grandfathered in until October 1st. Cities and Counties have until July 1st to obtain a permit to continue using those cameras post October.

The Gazette reports as of January, at least 25 cities were using the cameras. Cities must provide data, including traffic and crash figures, to justify why each traffic camera is needed in that location when they apply for a traffic camera permit.

The new law also requires local governments to spend their share of the revenue from traffic camera citations on transportation infrastructure or on police or fire department operations.
