A Kalona man faces multiple charges after allegedly shoplifting from the Iowa City Walmart last week.

Friday at around 7:10pm, witnesses reported seeing 41-year-old Christopher Onnen removing tags from clothing, then removing his own clothing to dress in the un-purchased merchandise. When officers arrived, Onnen, who showed signs of intoxication, allegedly still was dressed in several items of unpurchased merchandise and had other goods concealed in his pants.  Store management said Onnen had over $140 in merchandise on him.

He reportedly admitted driving to the store in his truck, but denied any drug or alcohol use. He was taken to the Iowa City Police Department and underwent a drug influence evaluation. It was determined that Onnen was under the influence of a CNS stimulant and incapable of safely operating a motor vehicle.

A check of his records showed Onnen’s driving status as barred for being an habitual offender until December 2025.

He was charged with 5th degree Theft, OWI second offense, and Driving while Barred. If convicted on all counts, Onnen could be sentenced to up to 49 months in jail.
