A North Liberty man was arrested and issued a no-contact order after an alleged assault on his domestic partner.

Police say 31-year-old James Stewart of Elm Ridge Court began assaulting the woman as she was driving him home at around 4:30am Friday.  He allegedly hit her with an open hand, and then reportedly attacked her in their kitchen.  According to the arrest report, Stewart grabbed the woman with one hand on her face and threw her up against the kitchen cabinets, breaking her hair clip.

The incident moved to the garage, where Stewart allegedly poured two cans of beer on the woman and hit her so hard that her jaw locked up. He then reportedly pushed her up against the side door of the garage, breaking a lamp.

The woman reported jaw and head pain, had fresh scratch marks on her back and arms, and fresh scratches on her hands that were bleeding. She told officers on scene that she and Stewart have been in an intimate relationship within the past year, and have been on and off together since August of 2022.

Stewart was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, a serious misdemeanor punishable by a jail sentence of up to one year if convicted.
