An Iowa City man faces charges after falsely identifying himself to police twice before his own mother provided authorities with his real identity.

Police were called to the 1900 block of Broadway Street Wednesday afternoon on reports of children being shot at with bb guns.  19-year-old Shawn Jones of Davis Street was pointed out by the father of one of the injured children as participating in the incident.  When questioned, Jones admitted to using his phone to record his friends chasing down other children in the neighborhood and shooting them with Orbeez guns. The child hit with the bb’s suffered several red welts on his legs and lower body.

Jones denied participating in the shootings, but provided officers with written consent to search his phone. Video of the incident was reportedly found.

Jones allegedly provided officers with a false name and date of birth twice as they attempted to identify him.  His actual identity was confirmed by his mother.

Jones was taken into custody and charged with Assault causing Bodily Injury and Harassment of a Public Official. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 13 months in jail.
