The cost to park in Iowa City public ramps and meters will double starting this summer.

The Iowa City city council has approved increasing the hourly rate to park in city-owned ramps from $1 to $2, and increasing the hourly rate to park in metered spots from $1.50 to $3. Parking fines will also increase, although rates for parking permits will remain the same.

Parking in the ramps will remain free for the first hour…a discount which will now be extended to the Chauncey Swan Ramp and the Harrison Street Ramp.

All of the changes will take effect on July 1st.

The price increases are the first for the city in 11 years.  City officials say they come as maintenance costs for parking facilities continue to rise, with current revenue only making up 22% of the parking division’s budget.
