Traffic control changes coming to Coralville’s 1st Avenue and I-80 interchange on Thursday

Starting early Thursday morning, May 23:

• The new on-ramp from 1st Avenue to 1-80 westbound will open.
• Northbound and southbound 1st Avenue traffic will be one lane in each direction using both oft h e new bridges in the new diverging diamond traffic pattern. See the image below and note the following:
  • To learn more about diverging diamond interchanges, please watch the lowa DOT’s video.
  • Traffic signals, pavement markings, and traffic signage will help drivers understand how to navigate through the interchange.
  • Northbound and southbound traffic on 1st Avenue will switch to the left side of the road before passing over 1-80 and then back to the right side of the road after passing over 1-80.
  • To travel northbound or southbound on 1st Avenue all thew a y through the interchange, drivers will go straight at each traffic signal as they drive north or south.
  • Drivers on 1st Avenue turning onto the 1-80 on-ramps will follow the traffic signs and pavement markings to complete their turns. Some of the turns are controlled by traffic signals and some of the turns are free movements.

• Bicyclists and pedestrians will use the new grade-separated trail that goes from the northeast corner of E. 9th Street, through two trail tunnels, over I-80 on the trail bridge, through a new trail tunnel crossing under 1st Avenue, and connecting to the trail that continues north along the west side of 1st Avenue.
