A former employee at an Iowa City convenience store faces charges after allegedly being seen on surveillance video stealing tobacco products.

An officer was called to the Casey’s General Store on North Dubuque Street on May 10th to review footage of a former employee, identified as 36-year-old Taneja Salter of East Bloomington Street.  Salter was working the afternoon of May 2nd when she was seen restocking the cigarette case with Newport cigarettes.  Salter is allegedly seen removing a number of packs from each carton and stocking those cartons back on the shelves.  She then reportedly hid them in a clear plastic trash bag that she removed from the stores.

Salter is then seen reentering the store and taking several packs of Swisher Sweet cigars and putting them in a paper bag, then subsequently leaving the store with them without paying.

Store personnel estimated Salter took over $110 in tobacco products.

She has been charged with 5th degree theft, a simple misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to 30 days if convicted.
