Brothers arrested after reported Iowa City home invasion

A pair of brothers has been arrested after a reported home invasion on Iowa City’s southeast side.

According to arrest records, 40-year-old Walter Oliver entered a residence on Taylor Drive just after 8:45 Friday night, displayed a gun, demanded money, and threatened to shoot one of the residents.

Witnesses were able to get Oliver’s license plate information as he fled. His car was located at his Taylor Drive residence, which is one block down the street from the alleged victim’s address. A search warrant was executed on the address, and Oliver was taken into custody. He has a previous domestic abuse conviction and reportedly showed signs of intoxication.

A police pat-down of the other people inside Oliver’s home turned up a black bag in the possession of Oliver’s brother, 28-year-old Deeshawn Oliver of Regal Lane. Two handguns were found inside.  Police say Deeshawn Oliver admitted to attempting to hide the two guns for his brother in order to cover up his brother’s involvement in the home invasion.

Walter Oliver is charged with 1st Degree Burglary, Going Armed With Intent, Intimidation With A Dangerous Weapons, Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, 1st Degree Harassment, Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons, Possession or Carrying Weapons While Intoxicated, Dominion or Control of A Firearm By A Domestic Abuser, Dominion or Control of a Firearm By A Felon, and Public Intoxication.

Deeshawn Oliver is charged with Accessory After the Fact, Harassment of a Public Official, and Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons.

If convicted on all charges against them, Walter Oliver faces a maximum of over 51 years in prison while Deeshawn Oliver faces up to 37 months behind bars.
