Iowa City Police say a convicted sex offender has been seen driving through the parking lot of an elementary school and parking his van on a nearby street.

60-year-old Everett Strohbusch was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5:45 Saturday night. According to arrest records, just after 9:45 Friday morning Strohbusch was reported as a suspicious person by staff at Shimek Elementary School on Grissel Place. Strohbusch had reportedly driven his Ford panel van through the school’s parking lot, and had been seen by a nearby resident parked on the street in full view of the school for at least an hour. Another Shimek neighbor reported Strohbusch had taken mail from their mailbox despite having no ties to the address.

Strohbusch was convicted of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child in 1995 and Exposing a Child to Harmful Materials in 2004. The two Wisconsin convictions make it illegal for him to be near a school. He’s now charged with a 2nd Offense Sex Offender Registry Violation. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.

Strohbusch, a transient, was given a five-year suspended sentence in 2022 after he lied to authorities about living at the Residence Inn on James Street in Coralville.
