An Iowa City man was taken into custody this week on warrants stemming from a series of alleged assaults.
Police say 38-year-old Jason Maurice was at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics the afternoon of February 3rd while a police officer was there taking an assault report. Maurice allegedly began punching and kicking the officer. Another officer made contact with Maurice, and he reportedly kicked at him. The officer sustained pain and swelling to his left ring finger during the incident, and Maurice was taken to the ground. He then allegedly questioned whether his actions were “good enough” for him to go to jail, stated he didn’t want to be at the UIHC, and would rather be jailed.
Maurice was back at the UIHC on February 12th and allegedly assaulted a female staff member by backing her against the wall and attempting multiple times to grab her in the groin region. Maurice had to be physically restrained and removed, and the victim reported being shaken and in fear for her safety.
Finally on February 18th, Maurice allegedly touched a female patient in a locked psych unit along the arm and moved his hand toward her butt before she told him to step away.
Maurice was booked into the Johnson County Jail Monday afternoon. He’s been charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Injury and two counts of simple assault. He could be sentenced to up to 26 months in jail if convicted on all charges.
