Officials with the Iowa City Community School District say the state of Iowa’s new law allowing students to use public vouchers to pay for private education has cost the district an estimated $1.3 million.
That’s according to Adam Kurth, the district’s chief financial officer. Kurth gave that estimate to the Cedar Rapids Gazette, saying the result will be an estimated 6.5% budget cut for next school year.
Kurth went on to say about 140 district students transferred to private schools for the current school year, with 70 to 80 of those students likely staying in the district if the new law had not been passed.
The school board is set to vote on the new budget at tonight’s meeting, which gets underway at 6:00 at the district administrative building on North Dodge Street.
