Iowa City Police say a suspect brought a gun into a downtown nightclub early Saturday morning.

Arrest records indicate officers were called to Brother’s on the Ped Mall early Saturday morning for two separate reports of a subject who was in possession of a firearm in the men’s room. The suspect left before police could arrive, but a man matching the description was found walking around 2 a.m. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Kendal Honts of Muscatine, was seen reaching into his waistband multiple times while taking cellphone videos. Police say that behavior is common for those taking social media videos featuring a firearm.

Honts reportedly admitted to being armed, and a 9mm Taurus handgun was recovered from his person.  He allegedly showed signs of intoxication, admitted to being at El Rays’ Live and Dive earlier in the night, and refused breath testing. Honts is charged with Public Intoxication and Possession of a Dangerous Weapon While Intoxicated. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 13 months in jail.
