An Iowa City man was arrested after allegedly hitting a woman with a wine bottle while she was sleeping.

The incident occurred during the overnight hours Wednesday.  According to police, 36-year-old Tavoris Williams of South Lucas Street was at a residence on the 400 block of 6th Avenue in Coralville just after 3:30am when he hit the woman in the face with the bottle, causing a laceration and deformity to her nose, a black eye, and difficult vision in the right eye.  Williams then allegedly grabbed the woman by her hair and pushed her face down into a pillow, causing her to have trouble breathing.

Williams reportedly hit the woman in the face several times as she tried to escape from him.  During the altercation, police say the two stumbled into a mirror and broke it.

A check of arrest records showed Williams with two domestic abuse convictions in Johnson County from 2018 and 2019. He was charged with Domestic Abuse 3rd offense and Domestic Abuse impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to a maximum ten years in prison.

A no- contact order was requested between the two parties and granted by Judge Brandon Schrock.
