An area transient was arrested for assault after a brief scuffle with Iowa City police as he attempted to run away from them.
19-year-old Kaden Leech allegedly committed the assault at the Old Capitol Town Center on South Clinton Street at around 4:15pm Thursday. Police say he punched and kicked the victim multiple times, and witnesses identified Leech as someone of interest in the incident.
When officers approached him, Leech allegedly ran away and hid from them. Once located, he was held at taser point and when he refused to comply was assisted to the ground.
The victim identified Leech by name and had prior contact with him. The victim also complained of jaw pain as a result of the reported assault.
Leech allegedly had bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech. He refused a post-arrest PBT.
Leech faces a maximum sentence of 14 months in jail if convicted on Assault, Interference with Official Acts and Public Intoxication charges.
