The University of Iowa has launched an independent investigation into its women’s gymnastics program.
According to a news release from UI Athletics, several gymnasts and staff members have recently expressed concerns with the environment being fostered by head coach Larissa Libby. Libby has since been put on paid administrative leave, although UI officials note the leave is not a disciplinary measure.
The UI has retained Phil Catanzano, co-founder of the Education and Sports Law Group, to lead an independent investigation into the program. School officials say in the news release they are “committed to the well-being of our student athletes and to ensuring that they train and compete in a respectful and safe environment.”
This is Libby’s 20th season as Iowa’s head coach and 24th overall with the program.
Earlier this week four Hawkeye gymnasts…Junior Ilka Juk and sophomores Emily Erb, Bailey Libby and Karina Muñoz…were selected to represent Iowa at the NCAA California Regional. The GymHawks will compete April 4th-7th at Cal-Berkeley.
