An Indiana man is scheduled to be sentenced today on counts stemming from a 2022 incident where he allegedly held a gun to his wife’s head when police confronted him at the Iowa City bus depot.
The incident occurred on December 12th of that year. According to police, information received by police from a third party indicated 34-year-old Cardale Hunter was armed and trying to take his wife by bus to Chicago against her will. The couple’s three children, an infant, a 7-year-old and an 8-year-old, were also present.
Upon seeing the arriving officers, Hunter reportedly pulled out a pistol, grabbed his wife, and pressed the gun to the back of her head and threatened to kill her if officers didn’t back off. They then fled to the parking ramp.
Hunter also attempted to commandeer a vehicle from a woman stopped on the second floor of the ramp but was unsuccessful, as the woman resisted and refused to get out of the vbehicle.
Hunter and his wife were eventually cornered in the ramp. Police negotiations continued until Hunter released his wife and shot himself.
Earlier this month, Hunter pleaded guilty to third-degree kidnapping, going armed with intent as a felon, felon in possession of a firearm, domestic abuse or assault causing bodily injury or mental illness, child endangerment, and second-degree robbery.
He faces up to 30 years in prison when sentenced.
