A Johnson County Jail inmate has died after collapsing while in custody.
According to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 36-year-old Nathaniel Davis Jr. fell over in his jail cell just before 6:15 on the night of March 14th. A deputy saw the incident on camera, responded, and determined Davis was having a medical emergency. Jail staff began CPR, applied an automatic external defibrillator, and called for an ambulance. Davis was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he died on March 19th.
At the request of the sheriff’s office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will be investigating the incident. An autopsy will be conducted by the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office. The State Jail Inspector has been notified as well.
Davis was booked into the jail on March 10th to serve a seven day sentence. Just last month he was convicted on multiple charges after leading Iowa City Police on a brief chase on Benton Street, a Kum & Go parking lot and Riverside Drive before finally being pinned in by multiple squad cars in the Staples parking lot. He was found in possession of a loaded Phoenix Arms 22 caliber pistol with a ground-off serial number despite being a convicted felon.
