Two University of Iowa students have been arrested after they allegedly removed construction signs from a major downtown Iowa City street project.

Iowa City Police say an officer observed the two removing signs from fencing at the intersection of Dubuque and Washington Streets at 1:45 Saturday morning. The signs direct traffic and pedestrians around the Dubuque Street Reconstruction Project, which began this week.

The two suspects reportedly dropped the signs and started running when confronted by police. They were eventually apprehended, and fake ID’s were reportedly found on their persons. The two suspects include an 18-year-old Burge Hall resident and a 19-year-old Catlett Hall resident.

Both men are charged with Interference With Official Acts and Possession of a Fake ID. The 19-year-old also faces charges of Public Intoxication and Possession of a Controlled Substance after he allegedly showed signs of intoxication and was found carrying a THC vape pen in his pocket.
