A Lisbon man faces drunk driving charges after he struck a deer while driving an ATV after dark near Sutliff last year.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says just after 9:30 on the night of May 23rd dispatchers were called by a subject who said they found 51-year-old Dustin Staab lying on Yellow Pine Avenue with an ATV in the ditch nearby. Staab was described by the caller as “pretty intoxicated”, and he’d suffered injuries to his head and ankle.

Once in the back of an ambulance, Staab reportedly told deputies he’d consumed three Busch Lights at a friend’s house before heading home, with the last drink coming at about 9:00. That’s a little over a half-hour before the accident, which happened when Staab hit a deer with the ATV. Deputies say Staab showed signs of intoxication, but because of the head and ankle injuries, field sobriety and walk-and-turn tests could not be conducted. He also allegedly refused breath, blood and urine testing once at the hospital.

Staab is now charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense, an ATV Highway Violation, and Driving While Suspended. He has a previous OWI conviction out of Linn County from 2021.
