The Iowa women’s and men’s basketball teams will learn on Sunday night how they will start their postseason.
The second-ranked Iowa women are almost guaranteed a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Hawkeyes finished the regular season with a 29-4 record, including a second-place finish in the Big Ten and the Big Ten Tournament championship. As a top four seed, the Hawkeyes would host the first two rounds of the tournament at Carver-Hawkeye Arena next weekend. The women’s NCAA selection show is set for 7:00 Sunday night on ESPN.
The Iowa men were considered a bubble team for the NCAA Tournament before losing their last two games to Illinois and Ohio State. The Hawkeyes, who ended the regular season at 18-14, are now likely to host at least one game in the National Invitation Tournament. That theory is supported by the fact that the UI Athletics Department issued a statement on Friday afternoon announcing that head football coach Kirk Ferentz’s scheduled Monday news conference to open spring practice would be moved to March 26th because the UI would likely be hosting an NIT game early in the week. The NIT selection show is Sunday night at 8:30 on ESPN2.
We’ll break down both Hawkeye teams’ postseason matchups Monday morning at 9 on the Hawkfanatic.com segment on The Mighty 1630 KCJJ.
