Two Shelter House residents are accused of executing an elaborate scheme to steal two cases of beer from an Iowa City grocery store.
According to arrest records, 47-year-old Cory McDaniels and 35-year-old Tamira Johnson entered the Waterfront Hy-Vee just before 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, selected two cases of beer, put them into Johnson’s motorized cart, covered them with a shawl and drove out of the store without paying for them. McDaniels also reportedly shoplifted a bottle of mouthwash and other hygiene products.
The two then allegedly met up at the Boyrum Street bus stop next to Hy-Vee and transferred the beer into a non-motorized cart, which they pushed into the Plumb Supply parking lot next door. There, they reportedly loaded the beer into McDaniels’ car and left southbound.
Police say they found McDaniels’ car parked a short time later with the beer still visible in the back seat. McDaniels and Johnson, who have previously been trespassed from all Hy-Vee locations, returned to the car about 15 minutes later and were taken into custody. The two are each charged with 5th Degree Theft and Trespassing. If convicted, they each face a maximum of 30 days in jail.
