A North Liberty man was arrested this week after allegedly taking his mother’s car without permission.

At around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of North Washington Street to take a report of an individual operating a vehicle without owner consent. It was discovered that 32-year old Zach Sywassink reportedly took his mother’s car from where it was parked without her consent.

When confronted about the incident, Sywassink claimed that he drove the vehicle around the corner from where it was parked and into a garage so that he could use the vehicle’s headlights to go through some boxes.

It was also alleged that Sywassink took his mother’s prescribed Tramadol and Oxycodone medication without permission. The mother reportedly told police that the two are the only ones living at the residence, constantly fighting with each other, and that Sywassink keeps taking her car without permission.

He was charged with Operating a Vehicle without Owner Consent, Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drug, and 5th degree Theft and could be sentenced to over three years in jail if convicted on all counts. Sywassink was released on his own recognizance the next day and a no-contact order was issued between him and his mother.
