The Iowa City Community School District is once again recommending the closure of Hills Elementary School.

Documents posted to the district’s web site ahead of tonight’s school board meeting indicate low enrollment and budget constraints are being cited for closing the school, which has an estimated enrollment of 126 students for next school year. Cost per student is estimated to be the highest in the district.

Closing Hills would save the district an estimated $1.6 million annually. Current students would be redistricted to other elementary schools.

District officials have tried to close Hills Elementary in the past, but they were met with fierce opposition from Hills parents.

Tonight’s meeting is set for 6:00 at the district offices on North Dodge Street.
