A University of Iowa student faces charges after allegedly taking a UTV belonging to the University from downtown to his fraternity.
Police say 19-year-old Jack Brennan got into a Kabota UTV located near the intersection of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue just before 2am Friday. He reportedly proceeded to drive the vehicle back to the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity located on Ridgeland Avenue, on the west side of the Iowa River.
The UTV belongs to the University of Iowa landscaping department and Brennan didn’t have permission for its use. When officers talked to him, he allegedly admitted to driving the vehicle to his residence. Brennan reportedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, but refused PBT and Datamaster tests.
He was charged with first offense OWI and operating a vehicle without owner consent. If convicted on the charges, Brennan could be sentenced to up to three years in jail. He appeared before Judge Jason Burns Friday and was released on his own recognizance after a public defender was appointed. He will be arraigned at a later date.
