A local Amazon driver was arrested after it was determined he was stealing packages intended for his customers.

37-year-old Matthew Pierce of South First Avenue worked for the company last year. Over the course of a few months, company officials say he failed to deliver over 200 packages to their intended customers, and marked them all as lost.

GPS data allegedly determined that Pierce did not go to the location of some of the deliveries.

When confronted in November, he reportedly admitted to stealing some of the packages and either trading them for narcotics or giving them out as gifts. Some of the stolen packages were allegedly recovered at Pierce’s Iowa City residence.

The value of the stolen merchandise exceeded $6300.

Pierce faces a 2nd degree Theft charge and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison if convicted.
