A North Liberty man was charged with OWI after a Johnson County deputy reportedly observed him speeding and driving erratically Monday afternoon.

The deputy observed 49-year-old Wesley Anderson of Vixen Circle traveling towards him on the 1900 block of Scales Bend Road at a high rate of speed, estimating him going approximately 50 miles an hour in the 35-mile per hour zone.

The deputy turned around to follow Anderson and allegedly observed several moving violations. Anderson went around a corner, crossed the center line and nearly struck a school bus head on before corrected himself, left the roadway and went onto the shoulder.  As Anderson approached the next curve, he allegedly didn’t turn soon enough and entered the ditch, kicking up dirt.  Once the roadway turned straight, Anderson reportedly was driving in the oncoming lane and down the middle of the roadway.

Once the deputy caught up to Anderson he initiated a traffic stop that he said took Anderson ten seconds to acknowledge and pull over.

North Liberty Police joined the stop at that point, and Anderson was allegedly observed with bloodshot watery eyes, unsteady balance, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.  He was reportedly unable to complete field tests, and a PBT showed his BAC at .296 percent, over three times the legal limit.

Anderson was charged with OWI second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor.
