A Coralville man was arrested Monday after allegedly assaulting a woman who was living with him despite having a no-contact order against him.

According to police, 36-year-old William Cardoni of Holiday Road knowingly impeded the woman’s breathing at around 3:30am by applying pressure to her throat or neck.  He also reportedly covered her mouth, restricting her oxygen intake.  The woman was observed with visible abrasions to the jawline.

A check of Cardoni’s criminal records showed that he was wanted on a warrant for domestic assault on the same woman back in December. In that incident, Cardoni and the woman got into a verbal argument, causing her to run to the back bedroom and lock herself inside with a roommate.  Cardoni allegedly picked the lock, entered the bedroom, and held her on the bed.  He then reportedly put his hand over her mouth and nose. The woman advised that this occurred on and off over a five minute period, and she couldn’t breathe while he was doing so.

She was able to get Cardoni off her by pulling his ponytail; he left the residence because her roommate called 911 to report the altercation.

A valid no-contact order had been issued in Des Moines County in April 2023 preventing Cardoni from contacting, abusing or threatening to abuse the woman.  He also has two previous domestic abuse convictions from Des Moines County on June 15th 2021 and April 17th 2023.

A warrant was issued for Cardoni’s arrest on December 6th and another no-contact order was requested.

Cardoni was arrested Monday and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault 3rd or subsequent offense, Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow, and Violation of the no-contact order. Coupled with the December charges, he could be sentenced to up to over 20 years in prison.
