The City of Coralville and the Iowa City Community School District have embarked on a master plan process to imagine a new or renovated Recreation Center and Indoor Pool Competition Center in Coralville.
The master plan intention is to create a design that will either build an addition to the existing spaces with new, modern facilities that will serve the community for many years to come; renovate existing facilities to provide better functioning spaces; or do both an addition and a renovation that blend look and function with the new spaces. Both city and school district staff are serving on the leadership and planning teams.
The hope is to have a master plan to present to the School Board, Coralville City Council, and the community in June.
The Coralville Recreation Center just celebrated its 50th year of service to the community and the Indoor Pool has been a shared space pool serving as both a competition center for district athletics and for recreational and lap swimming, aquatic fitness, and swim lessons for thirty-six years. Over 150,000 people a year visit the Coralville Recreation Center and over 13,000 people participate in recreation and aquatic swim programs. The facilities are in good shape but are beginning to feel their age, look dated, and no longer function under today’s standards.
The new swim competition center would combine practice and swim meet space for West High School, Liberty High School, Northwest Middle School, and North Central Middle School. Consultants to the project are Water’s Edge from Kansas City and Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City.
