A Cedar Rapids man was taken into custody Sunday afternoon after an incident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics last month.

Officers responded to the facility the night of January 30th on reports of an assault involving a patient and a nurse.  The nurse reportedly told them that 59-year-old Scott Lebeda of L Street SW was agitated with hospital staff and wanted to leave the unit immediately.  The nurse entered the room, and an attempt was made to de-escalate the situation.

Lebeda allegedly responded by attempting to grab the nurse by the throat.  He was unsuccessful but reportedly caused a scratch on the nurse’s neck approximately six inches long.  Witnesses to the event corroborated the nurse’s narrative.

A warrant was issued on Thursday, and he was arrested Sunday. Lebeda has been charged with assault causing injury, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.
