An adult and three children were rescued from a fire at their residence early Wednesday morning.

Cedar Rapids firefighters were called to the 900 block of 10th Street SE at 2:41 am on reports of smoke in the area. Upon arrival, they encountered smoke coming from the first-floor window door of the dwelling, and a small amount of active fire in the first floor window.

Crews entered the structure and were met by smoke on the first and second levels of the home.  They rescued one adult and three children from the second story.

There were four cats inside at the time of the incident; two did not survive.

The family was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment; their conditions are unknown.  The surviving cats were sheltered by a neighbor.

The home suffered fire, smoke and water damage. The cause remains under investigation.
