An area transient was charged with robbery after trying to steal cash from an east side Iowa City store.

Police were called to an unspecified business at 1901 Broadway Street just before 6pm Tuesday for a clerk in a physical altercation with 22-year-old Kailoe Fry in the parking lot.  Upon arrival, they found Fry being detained by the clerk.

It was determined that Fry tried to steal nearly $300 from the cash register when the clerk/owner attempted to stop him. A physical altercation ensued, with Fry allegedly punching the clerk multiple times in the face while being detained.  When questioned, Fry reportedly admitted stealing the cash, saying he wanted to buy food and pay for his parent’s rent.

The clerk sustained minor lacerations to his arms and swelling on his face.

Fray was arrested and charged with 2nd degree Robbery, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison term of up to ten years if convicted.
