Investigators say the subject of a no-contact order hosted a Zoom meeting with a University of Iowa Police officer from the protected party’s apartment.

21-year-old Mitchell Smith of East Washington Street is currently facing charges of Domestic Abuse Assault and Domestic Abuse Assault with Strangulation Causing Injury relating to a case from last November. A no-contact order has been issued in the case.

Iowa City Police say they were notified on January 25th of a possible violation. Smith was involved in a Zoom meeting with UI Police when the officer noticed Smith’s background looked like the protected party’s apartment. Body camera footage from Smith’s initial arrest reportedly matched the same room seen in the Zoom call. Police say a check of the apartment turned up the location of the Zoom call.

Smith was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 5:45 Monday morning and charged with a no-contact order violation.
