Iowa City Police say a woman staying at the city’s emergency shelter pulled a knife on another guest Friday night.

Officers responded to the Southgate Avenue facility just after 6:30 p.m. for an armed subject. Staff advised that someone staying at the shelter reported that another guest…identified as 44-year-old Kelli Rehwinkel…had pulled a large knife on him while he was trying to calm her down. Investigators say they found a large homemade serrated knife in Rehwinkel’s backpack, which was lying on her bed. A small glass pipe with residue was also reportedly found wrapped inside a pair of socks in Rehwinkle’s pocket.

Rehwinkel is charged with Assault While Displaying a Weapon and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on both charges, she faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
