City of Iowa City news release
2/2/24
In celebration of Black History Month, the Iowa City Senior Center’s (ICSC) Original Mature Groovers (formerly known as Elders of Color) are teaming up with local non-profit organization Sankofa Outreach Connection to present Iowa City’s first-of-its-kind Black History Ball.
The ball will be held from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, February 3rd in the ICSC’s Assembly Room. The evening serves as a celebration of the rich history and culture of the Iowa African American community, while also promoting unity and fostering connections.
The ICSC is partnering with the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art to present an art exhibit curated specifically for this event, which will open the day of the Ball. The night will include live jazz music by the Curtis Taylor Quartet, keynote speaker Dr. Ashley Howard, and food representing both African cuisine and traditional African American dishes.
Tickets are $50/person and can be purchased through Eventbrite.com. A link to the page is included below.
Those interested should purchase tickets soon since space is limited. Funds raised from this event will support programming for the Iowa City Senior Center’s Original Mature Groovers and the nonprofit organization Sankofa Outreach Connection.
