From August through December 2023, Fare Free Iowa City dramatically increased transit ridership throughout our community. In those months alone, there was an increase of 201,191 passenger trips when compared to the same five-month period for 2022. The average increase per month was 47%. This increase in service numbers significantly outpaces the national average. According to the National Transit Database, for the months of August through November, public transit agencies across the country reported an average increase in ridership for fixed-route bus service of 10%.
