An Iowa City man wanted for armed robbery has been taken into custody in Louisiana.

That’s according to a news release from Cedar Rapids Police, who say 21-year-old Andrew Derr of the Hawks Ridge Apartments was arrested Wednesday in New Orleans. As of Thursday morning he was still awaiting extradition back to Iowa.

The CRPD and the Federal Bureau of Investigation identified Derr as the suspect in a January 3rd armed robbery at the Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust branch on Council Street NE.

Derr has had other recent run-ins with local law enforcement. He was arrested last month after reportedly calling 9-1-1 multiple times and asking a Johnson County dispatcher out on a date. He was charged with Obstruction of Emergency Communications, a simple misdemeanor.

A few days earlier, Derr reportedly fell down in front of the Airliner in downtown Iowa City, then ran down the middle of Clinton Street, stopped traffic, and laid himself on the hood of a passing car.  When he saw University of Iowa Police arriving, he allegedly lunged at an officer with both hands. He was taken to the ground, with the officer suffering injuries to a hand and a knee. For that incident, Derr was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations Causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication.
