A pair of Johnson County fire departments helped battle a structure fire in sub-zero temperatures near Palisades Keppler State Park early Saturday morning.

Ely firefighters were called to an address on Palisades Access Road between Ely and Mount Vernon at approximately 3:15 Saturday morning for a garage fire where the structure was completely engulfed. Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy flames that were starting to spread to the nearby house.

Firefighters from Solon, the Jefferson Monroe Fire Department in Swisher, Mount Vernon  and Lisbon were called in for mutual aid. Crews acted quickly to stop the spread to the residence, then focused attention on extinguishing the flames in the garage.

The garage was a total loss with minor damage to the home. No cause or damage estimate has been released.

The Ely Fire Department reports the sub-zero temperatures made battling the blaze extremely difficult because of freezing equipment. Crews were on the scene for almost four hours.
