A drunk driving suspect faces an additional charge after he allegedly assaulted another inmate at the Johnson County Jail.

Iowa City Police initially arrested 45-year-old Lavail Drain of South Governor Street early Friday morning. Officers were called to an address on East Bloomington Street just after 12:15 a.m. for a fight in progress. Investigators say Drain had driven to the home of a person who has a no-contact order against him and started yelling at their mother. Drain then drove away, and was stopped by police a short time later on South Lucas Street near College Street. He reportedly showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking, and refused breath testing.  Drain was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated – 2nd Offense, Driving While Barred and Violating a No-Contact Order.

Just before 3:00 Friday morning Drain was allegedly seen on the Johnson County Jail surveillance system attacking another inmate inside a holding cell. Deputies say Drain punched the man multiple times and picked him up and threw him down to the ground. The alleged victim suffered a bloody nose.

Drain now faces an additional charge of Assault Causing Bodily Injury. If convicted on all charges against him, Drain faces a maximum of five years in jail.
