Eastside Iowa City residents expressed concern at Wednesday night’s Planning and Zoning Commission meeting over expansion plans at Proctor & Gamble.
The company has designs on the former Kirkwood Community College property on Lower Muscatine Road. Proctor & Gamble officials have asked the city to rezone the land so it can expand its nearby operations. But at Wednesday night’s Planning and Zoning meeting, residents living nearby argued that the expansion could lead to increased pollution, noise and traffic in the area. Some argued the adjacent Oral B plant already releases noxious odors into the surrounding neighborhoods.
About 15 people attended Wednesday night’s meeting, with several speaking out against the proposed rezoning.
Proctor & Gamble site engineering coordinator Joe Townsend said while his company had plans to buy the property, exactly what would be built there is still to be determined.
Despite the concerns, the commission approved the rezoning unanimously. The issue now goes to the city council, which will likely hold the first vote on the matter at its February 20th meeting.
