The University of Iowa has issued a list of tips for dealing with the extreme cold.

A HawkAlert issued Saturday afternoon advised that to stay safe in the frigid temperatures, you should:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
  • Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your car if you must travel, and
  • Dress warmly and monitor local weather resources for updates.

If you must travel, you are advised to:

  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat.
  • Wear mittens that are snug at the wrist, which are better than gloves.
  • Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold, and
  • Stay dry and out of the wind.
