Pet dies in Cedar Rapids house fire

A family pet perished in a Cedar Rapids house fire Wednesday morning.

According to a release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, the report of a house fire in the 1600 block of 48th St. NE came in at approximately 10:15am  Firefighters arrived on scene and found fire and thick smoke coming from the kitchen area of the single-residence home. They made entry from both the back and side doors with hose lines and quickly extinguished the fire.

Search teams confirmed there were no human occupants in the house at the time of the fire. Unfortunately, one cat was found deceased and two more were taken to a veterinarian for further treatment and care. Their condition is unknown.  There is fire, smoke, and water damage on the main floor of the home.

Fire investigators on scene have preliminarily determined the cause of the fire to be an unattended cooking fire. No firefighter injuries were reported during this incident.
