Iowa City’s City Council narrowly passed a resolution at its Tuesday meeting regarding the Israel-Hamas war.

The resolution called for a permanent cease-fire, the return of all hostages, and the delivery of humanitarian aid.  It also condemns the October 7th attack by Hamas, and the killing of civilians in Gaza and West Bank by Israel. The resolution opposes antisemitism, Islamophobia and anti-Arab bigotry with the aim of achieving a just and lasting political solution.

The resolution puts Iowa City among a number of Democratic-led cities around the US who have passed the mostly symbolic resolution.

Mayor Bruce Teague, Mayor Pro-Tem Mazahir Salih, and council members Laura Bergus and Andrew Dunn voted for the resolution, while councilors Shawn Harmsen, Josh Moe and Megan Alter said they favored waiting to pass the resolution to further consider the language.
