An area transient has been arrested after an alleged early-morning burglary in Iowa City.

37-year-old Ronald Givins reportedly broke into the victim’s home at around 5:15am Saturday. The victim was home and had locked themselves in a closet during the incident. Givins allegedly broke a window to gain entry and went through many containers to search for items.

When Givins exited the structure, police gave him multiple commands to surrender, but officers say he instead ran back into the building. Once taken into custody, a post-arrest search of his person reportedly located multiple items belonging to the victim. Many containers in the victim’s house had been gone through. The total value of stolen belongings was estimated at less than $300.

Givins was charged with 2nd degree Burglary, 5th degree Theft, Criminal Mischief, and Interference with Official Acts. He could be sentenced to over ten years in prison if convicted on all counts.
